"Gerstner's solution is often criticizes today for the fact that it corresponded to a case of rotational rather than irrotational flow, which hence could not develop from a state of rest. It was neverthelesss a completely rigorous solution for the ingenious condition that he originally assumed, as well as a very close approximation to actuality, and as such it represented a definite milestone in the progress of science."
