René Kieffer commissioned this text, one of the few he would publish in an original edition, to accompany the etchings he had acquired from Valdo Barbey in 1944. He first approached Pierre Marc Orlan, then Blaise Cendrars, whose Easter in New York he had already published: "I thought then that I had, for two years, eighteen copperplates by Valdo Barbey (another comrade) on the ports of the world, and that rather than leave them in a cabinet, I could publish them either as an album or a book, with a small text for each plate.? (July 28, 1946) But Cendrars' project, the future Bourlinguer, soon outgrew the framework established by Kieffer, who grew impatient. The publisher therefore turned to Claude Farrère, who composed a whimsical voyage around these 18 harbor engravings.
