Beschreibung:

circa 14 x 7,5 c., Engraved title, title, 258 pp., 1 blank leaf. Contemporary polished calf, gilt spine Still early edition with the nice engraving (with the alternative title "des Gaules") which shows a flying woman with wings and a trumpet (fama) surrounded by putti, all above the globe. This is the major work by Rabutin-Bussy (1618-1693) who published several erotic novels and biographies. The first edition came out in 1660 and in 1665 he was sent to the Bastille where he remained imprisoned for more than a year having offended members of the royal family in his writings. Most of his books were forbidden in France and probably printed in the Netherlands. The present well printed edition looks like an Elzevier. - At the end, after the "maximes d amour", there is a "Copie d une lettre escritte au duc de Saint Aignan par le comte de Bussy du 12 Novembre 1665". - Small bookplate, minor browning, front hinge with some cracking at the top, but absolutely solid on five bands, pretty binding.
