Very good condition with small traces of wear. - The Baltic/Balkans project is the product of a joint collaboration by the National Museum in Szczecin, apollonia european art exchanges (Strasbourg) and ArtBox (Thessaloniki). The experience of each partner in transnational art projects in the Baltic and Balkan regions provided the basis for the project's program of exhibitions. Since the mid-1990s, the National Museum in Szczecin has coordinated the Mare Articum project, which is aimed at facilitating artistic exchanges in the Baltic region, including the Baltic Contemporary Art Biennial in Szczecin. In the same period, both apollonia european art exchanges and ArtBox.gr have pursued the artistic-theoretical projects Action Field Kodra, Kalamaria / Thessaloniki and Forum European Cultural Exchanges in Thessaloniki (FORUM), which are aimed at stimulating artistic collaboration in the Balkans. Several exhibitions have been realized jointly within the Baltic/Balkans program. These include Restaging the Past exhibition and video program, Projected Visions: Baltic and Projected Visions: Balkans (The National Museum in Szczecin), as well as the artists in residence program within FORUM 2008 with the final presentation at Action Field Kodra - 8h visual arts festival (ArtBox.gr). The Baltic/Balkans project is organized within the Artventure Visual Art Network, an initiative supported by the Culture2000 program by the European Commission. The Baltic/Balkans project also was sponsored in part by the City of Szczecin's patronage of the National Museum in Szczecin. The National Museum in Szczecin is the Culture Institution of the Marshall of the West Pomerania Voivodeship, co-organized by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. / In the mid-1990s, Norwegian political scientist Iver B. Neumann introduced to the debate on regions the concept of imagined communities entities that are never naturally created but have their roots in discursive constructs based on geographies, language and cultural attributes. Drawing on the posits of Benedict Anderson (Imagined Communities, 1983), Neumann argued that regions are imagined communities just like nations, which emerge in a dynamic process of the creation of social meaning ('A region-building approach to Northern Europe,' Review of International Studies, 1994). The democratic changes in Eastern Europe in the late 1980s and early 1990s that ended the cold war-era division of the world meant that new macroregional structures appeared on the map of Europe. The Baltic Sea basin was one of them. Following several decades when the Iron Curtain restricted the exchange of goods and ideas, the area had a chance to become a meaningful whole again - a new Hanseatic League. The 1990s also saw the Balkan Peninsula thrust into the global spotlight, becoming the stage for Europe's latest armed conflict. Intensified by media coverage, the ensuing debate led to a criticism of regional essentialism, with questions arising about assumptions of the existence of objective, inborn characteristics and the stability of transnational structures. In the Baltic basin, political and pragmatic region-building efforts were aimed at creating the concept of a common identity. Meanwhile, a reverse process aimed at deconstructing a stigmatising image that had been slapped on the region by the outside world was taking place in the Balkans. Both phenomena had a fundamental impact on the debate over regional identity and the means of constructing and renegotiating it. Two decades on, the debate on a 'Baltic identity' has lost its momentum. Viewed from the start with scepticism by critics and theoreticians in the region, the concept of 'Baltic art' as an autonomous quality has failed to inspire curatorial interest outside the region. The 'Baltic' concept sells better in publications promoting tourism and business than in those promoting culture or the arts. And the majority of the artistic projects that began as Baltic projects have since evolved more open structures that are unbound by regional limitations. In the late 1990s, the Balkans entered (from the editorial) / spis tre?ci/content: wst?p/ -- editorial/ -- Magdalena Lewoc -- BA?TYK/BA?KANY BALTIC/BALKANS -- Ludzie z ogonami albo ba?ka?ska przepa?? / -- People with Tails, or a Balkan Abyss / -- Agata Araszkiewicz -- Ba?kany jako Inny w europejskim kontek?cie sztuki wspó?czesnej / -- The Balkans as the Other within the European Context of Contemporary Art / -- Maja ?iri? -- Krótka historia SocialEast Forum / -- A Short History of the SocialEast Forum / -- Reuben Fowkes -- Przesz?o??, która trwa / -- Continous Past/ -- Anu Allas -- REINSCENIZUJ?C PRZESZ?O??/RESTAGING THE PAST -- Pomi?dzy traum? a dziedzictwem - powrót historii / -- Between Trauma and Legacy - the Return of History/ -- Magdalena Lewoc -- arty?ci/artists -- Silja Saarepuu / -- Heie Treier -- Aleksandra Polisiewicz / -- Agata Araszkiewicz -- Jerzy Truszkowski / -- Ryszard Ziarkiewicz -- Pawe?
