The work became highly influential and was translated into various languages. It was banned in Russia until the revolution and was then exploited by the communists for their anti-zarist propaganda. The first edition appeard in Paris the year before (1843). This Belgian reprint contains a genealogy at the end together with: "Un mot sur l ouvrage de M de Custine".
