Erste deutsche Ausgabe. Sabin XIV, 258, 592448. Je mit rot-schwarz gedruckten Titelblättern und mit Titelvignette in Holzschnitt. Der niederländische Historiker und Philologe Conelis de Pauw (1739-1799) arbeitete mit an Diderots Enzyklopädie. Mit dem vorliegenden Werk zu Amerika und seiner Bevölkerung, polarisierte er stark und löste einen leidenschaftlichen Streit unter Wissenschaftler aus, indem er die Bewohner des Kontintents und deren Kulturen in umfassendem und grundlegendem Maße stark pejorativ beschrieb und entsprechende Schlussfolgerungen zog. "The author endeavors to show the inferior character of everything American, especially the inhabitants, and his work evoked considerable controversy. It contains a very curious account of the 'Hermaphrodites de la Floride', and the custom of 'Circoncision' and 'Infibulation'." (Sabin, Seite 256 f.). With the present work on America and its people, he polarized heavily and triggered a passionate argument among scientists by describing the inhabitants of the continent and their cultures comprehensively and fundamentally in a strongly pejorative way, drawing conclusions from this mindset.
