circa 19,4 x 12,6 cm., Together about 1200 pages, volume 1 with an engraved frontispiece. Half-calf with marbled boards in marbled box (around 1930?) The first four volumes of the large collection of famous crime stories and how they were resolved and the perpetrators punished. The author François Gayot de Pitaval (1673 - 1743) was a lawyer in Lyon. His relations were particularly succesful as he understood to highlight the human side of each case, the psychological motivation, the effects on victims and their families, the clues that led to the convictions etc. - cf. Hayn-G. VI, 208: "Hochinteressante, auch in Bezug auf die ältere und neuere Skandalchronik ganz Europa's, wichtige Publication". The first edition was puiblished between 1734 and 1743 in twenty volumes. The present four volumes cover hundreds of cases.
