MANACHAT QUARTER IN JERUSALEM. // With this self-revealing little rhyme, Abraham Cherniak ? architect, artist, and poet ? opens his collection of poems, in which meditation and pure lyricism mingle in an outpouring of the man within and of himself. In his numerous drawings, created over a period of many years, the Jerusalem scene predominates, a recurring echo of a love and a yearning that has endured throughout his life. The life of Abraham Cherniak is a mosaic of many landscapes, all of them nurtured within him during a lifetime of day to day activity and artistic creativity, latent within him. Jerusalem for him was a sounding board and the fountain of his inspiration. "We are the youth of the Revolution", proclaimed Jewish students in Russia in the early nineteen-twenties. One of the representatives of this generation was Abraham Cherniak, a student at one of the engineering schools in Moscow. "The wave passed over us, too, and we aspire to the materialisation of Socialism. But in addition to that we claim a homeland for the Jewish people." This credo was still accepted in the first years of the Soviet regime, and it was voiced openly and proudly by the members of the Academic Jewish Youth Organisation "He-haver" (I.S.Y.F.), of which Cherniak was one of the leaders. ...
