Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). -- Very good and clean exemplar. -- Antonio Ferreira?s collection of poetry, the Poemas Lusitanos, first published in 1598, is one of the monuments of Renaissance literature in Portugal, not least because every poem is in Portuguese. His passionate love of his own language brought a special distinction to everything Ferreira wrote? and he wrote a great deal, in many different poetic genres, several of which he introduced into his native literature. The Muse Reborn is concerned not with Ferreira?s well-known tragedy Castro, but with this other body of verse, and is the first attempt to explore its literary and aesthetic qualities. Taking as his starting point the poet?s preoccupation with imitation, which is discussed in the light of modem theories of intertextuality, T. F. Earle systematically compares Ferreira?s work with his principal literary models, Virgil, Horace, and Petrarch. Translations are provided for the benefit of readers without Portuguese, who will find that Ferreira emerges from this new study as an original and important talent. ISBN 9780198158561
