The freestanding pottery-capped earthen pillars which symbolize one's ancestors are only one aspect of the ancestral perspective; another is their integration into ancestral sanctuaries. The Dogon ancestral cult sanctuary (whose name, binou, designates not only the ancestor and its sacred, mythic totem but the sanctuary itself) houses the stone which fell from the sky with the rain and contains part of the vital force essential to Dogon life. The symbolic form accrues additional meaning with the sacrifices and libations made to it, rituals which often involve rendering the surface of the form with a wash of white kaolin. Like plaster, the fine clay protects and preserves the surface of the form, but in equal measure, because white is the color of sacredness, it enhances the inviolable quality of the symbol. With the introduction on Christianity, the continuity of this integration between ancestral grave, pottery and kaolin is symbolically maintained; concrete has replaced the earth and in lieu of the pottery and kaolin, mosaic tiles and broken porcelain are placed on the ancestral graves located at the entrance of a traditional chief at Po in Burkina Faso. (Fig. 10) Centuries of Islamic presence in the midst of traditional savannah cultures effected changes both imperceptible and radical, but for the most part, the sacred ancestral imageries persisted and were integrated into new architectural forms where they continue to function as a metaphor for the ancestral presence. ?
