Beschreibung:
circa 20 x 13,5 cm., Together around 9000 pages with 51 often folding plates, 48 folding maps, 1 folding table. Contemporary polished calf with richly gilded spines, two labels, red fore-edges, decorated endpapers Brunet III, 771; Cox I, 33; Ebert 9296; Graesse IV, 79; Sabin 38632. First edition of this compilation of travel accounts following the collection "Histoire des voyages" of the Abbé Prevost. The pretty engravings (here numbered 38-82 and 1-6, marked "Benard direxit") show costumes, indigenous rituals, warfare or habits etc. With maps of China, Central Asia, Sibiria, Japan, the Caribbean, Mexico, South-Amerika, La Plata, Brazil, Louisiana, Virginia, New England, Hudson Bay, Quebec, Hispaniola, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Grenada, Jamaika, Barbados, Juan Fernandez, the Northern Sea, Spitzbergen, Iceland, Kamtshatka, Greenland, Tahiti etc. The folding table gives a comparison of the various polynesian dialects with the languages of other islands in the Pacific. - This set does not have the volumes 1-6 and 24-32 or the separate atlas. - Half-title and title of volume 9 with repairs. Only volume 8 with stronger waterstaining else just partly with light staining but mostly clean. Endpaper with engraved armorial bookplate, all plates with a very small and unobtrusive blind stamp with the arms of the family Haldenwang in the upper corner. Bindings mostly nice, only volume 8 with some lighter damage, else just somewhat rubbed or slightly bumped but mostly fine. The last two volumes a little different. A very decorative set of 17 volumes.
