Sie ist mit 2.395.375 Einwohnern (Berechnungsstand 2012) die viertgrößte Stadt des Landes nach Lagos, Ibadan und Benin City. ... (wiki) // ... Like in most other parts of Northern Nigeria, the Native Authority system was introduced in Kano in the first decade of the 20th Century by the British colonizers after they had over-run and added Northern Nigeria to the British Empire. Kano itself fell to the British in 1903, almost a century after the Jihad (religious crusade) of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio and the subsequent establishment of Fulani rule in many parts of Northern Nigeria. It was in 1807 that Kano itself was taken over by one Sulaiman who had the flag and blessings of Dan Fodio, leader of the Jihad that ended centuries of Habe Rule in most parts of the North. The Jihad was more of a reformist movement than one aimed at bringing about fundamental changes in Northern societies, and the Fulani political system introduced then was in substance no more than the original Habe form of political organisation. But with the Jihad came the centralisation of political power in the hands of the Emir and the development of an elaborate administrative machinery. Based on a system of fief-holding and patronage, the Emir's authority was maintained through the institution and extension of Islamic law and courts, a complex system of taxation and of course, the above-mentioned administrative machinery. ?
