Oktober 1981 in Chicago) war ein US-amerikanischer Psychoanalytiker österreichischer Herkunft. ... Kohut gilt als Begründer einer eigenständigen psychoanalytischen Tradition. Er begründete die selbstpsychologische Richtung der Psychoanalyse und erarbeitete damit eine spezifische Behandlung des pathologischen Narzissmus bzw. narzisstischer Störungen. Kohut unterscheidet einen gesunden Narzissmus als Ausdruck eines starken, lebensfähigen Selbst, das seine Fähigkeiten erweitern und seine Bedürfnisse befriedigen will, und einen pathologischen Narzissmus eines schwachen Selbst, das nur über die Vortäuschung der eigenen Grandiosität stabilisiert werden kann. Gelingt dies nicht, folgt eine Depression. Er erweiterte damit das Spektrum der psychoanalytisch behandelbaren Störungen und schuf eine wesentliche Ergänzung zur Freudschen Triebtheorie und zur ich-psychologischen Richtung. Aufbauend auf Kohuts Werk und unter Einbeziehung der Erkenntnisse der neueren Säuglings- und Kleinkindforschung entwickelte sich die intersubjektive Schule der Psychoanalyse. ...
