For a long time Western Jewry had suffered a process of spiritual disruption and debilitation. In the course of scarcely a century and a half, Jewry experienced the upheaval of the great migrations from Europe to America. As great as were the physical disruptions, the cultural devastation was greater still. American society was a frontier world. American society was preoccupied with establishing the material basis of life. Isaac Mayer Wise, a founder of Reform Judaism, could not find on the entire continent, when he first arrived here in the mid-nineteenth century, even a single copy of a basic book of Jewish law, the Mishnah. There were large numbers of unlearned Jews without the basic knowledge or skills to understand or to express Jewish spirituality. ? (Vorwort) ISBN 0916694801
