The anonymous author ("un Filosofo Fiorentino") was a Carmelite, and lecturer in philosophy in the seminary at Arezzo. The Cipolla Tafino, to whom the work is dedicated, is Father Negro, professor of church history in the same seminary. There are several longeer chapters dedicated to food and drink in which the author analyses the effect of different kinds of vegetables, meat, fish, wine, cheese etc on mental health. Several symptoms he describes would today rather be called "depression".
