At their apogee, in the eighteenth century, fans in the Western world were used indoors and out, summer and winter - as memory aids, for parlor games, for political propaganda, as masks, lorgnettes, cryptic communicators, and, of course, accessories in the oldest game, when dalliance was a major preoccupation. They reflected the goals and values of those who carried them, and in use they revealed a temperament in motion. This volume offers a selection in full color of one hundred exquisite fans produced in Europe and the Americas from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. All are now part of the famous and extensive collection of fans at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; many were given to the Museum by Esther Oldham, the fruit of her sixty years of avid collecting. Here are fans made of paper and shell, ivory and feathers, skin and metal. The subjects range from Biblical scenes to literary themes to Greek and Roman mythology; from historical and commemorative fans to scenes of daily life. The earliest fan pictured dates from the late sixteenth century, while the most recent example, made of brightly dyed orange feathers, was produced in the 1920s. In addition to detailed entries on the fans, the book includes essays on fans as social history, on their manufacture and marketing, and on the collection of Esther Oldham, whose private passion is now a public treasure.
