Although these artists contribute essentially to the Visual expression of any work of film art, it is hardly possible to find basic facts about them in periodicals or in books of reference. The FIAF Documentation Commission decided to compile and publicize all facts that are available in the FIAF Archives on these artists. Preparing existing material for publication necessitates the exclusion of additional lengthy research. Anyone, for example, searching for the year of birth of a set designer who chiefly is known as a painter and made no more than one film may under-stand that some gaps still existing in this publication can be filled only after many years.
