Beschreibung:

circa 17,8 x 10,8 cm., Frontispiece by Fessard after Cochin fils, XXIV, 182 pp.; 2 ff, 128 pp.. Contemporary red Morocco (remboitage) with richly gilded spine, covers and fore-edge Barbier III, 34; Cohen-De Ricci 210; Gay-L. III, 23: "C'est un recueil d'anecdotes facetieuses et de recherches historiques". First edition of this curious collection of anecdotes, satires, little historic treatises or stories based on puns about all sorts of coats: manteau de cheminée, manteau mal-taillé, manteau de femme, manteau troussé, manteau de nuit, manteaux des saints, rue Froidmanteau etc. - Anne Claude de Caylus (1692-1765) was a French antiquarian and pioneer archaeologist who also cultivated a bizarre sense of humour. - This copy in a very elegant binding, apparently a 19th century remboitage using the binding of some other contemporary work; at the end there are some 150 white leaves bound in.

Bemerkung:

- Some browning, little spotting, endpaper with old quotes about coats, binding with a few spots but nice and very decorative.
