Bemerkung:

"Dugdale's [1605-1686] archaeological and topographical masterpiece, on which so many county histories have been modelled" erschien erstmals 1656. "The bulk of the volume consists of pedigrees and histories of county families, in conjunction with accounts of the places where they were settled, and of religious and charitable foundations and their founders, all of them remarkable for general accuracy, and accompanied by constant references to authorities. Jeremy Taylor... spoke of the volumes as 'very much the best of anything that ever I saw in that kind.'" (DNB) - Die neuen Karten u. Tafeln sind meist von Edward Kirkall (geb. 1695) nach Henry Beighton (ca. 1686-1743) gestochen. Dieser war ein seinerzeit wichtiger britischer Kartograph. Viele der Ansichten u. Textkupfer stammen jedoch von Wenzel Hollar aus der ersten Ausgabe. - Unter den Tafeln auch eine Ansicht von St. Michael in Coventry vom Norden (im Zweiten Weltkrieg durch Bomben zerstört) sowie verschiedener Landsitze u.
