Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Niederländischer Text plus einer kurzen englischen Zusammenfassung. - Four Amsterdam neighbourhoods merged to form what has been known since 1 January 1990 as Westerpark and administered since May of that year by a subcouncil and an executive consisting of a chairperson and three portfolio holders. Westerpark has about thirty thousand residents in some twenty thousand dwellings. Its core is the park from which it takes its name. To the north of the park lie the Spaarndam and Zeehelden districts, to the south the Staatslieden and Frederik Hendrik districts. Laid out between 1880 and 1925, these areas are mainly residential, combining private building, particularly in the Staatslieden and Frederik Hendrik neighbourhoods, with social housing for associations and corporations. These developments were designed by numerous well-known architects, among them H.P. Berlage, K.P.C, de Bazel, HJ.M. Walenkamp and M. de Klerk, who built his world-famous blocks around the Spaarndammer-plantsoen in the years before 1920. ? Development of Westerpark has concentrated on housing, but the planning policy encompasses much more. In the comingyears the park will be renovated according to a design by the American landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson working with Francine Houben. The Wester gasworks site has become a cultural centre for performances, fashion shows, opera and festivities, with the theatre of Toneelgroep Amsterdam and the television studio on the nearby waterworks site as the principal attractions. The plan announced in December 1997 to establish a branch of the Stedelijk Museum in Westerpark is a sign of the cultural transformation that has taken place in this district in the nineties.
