Das IISG wurde 1935 von Nicolaas Wilhelmus Posthumus (1880-1960) in Amsterdam gegründet, um vor dem Hintergrund des aufsteigenden Faschismus ein Archiv der sozialistischen Bewegungen und Strömungen (einschl. von Nachlässen) aufzubauen. In der Einleitung des ersten Bandes schreibt Posthumus zur Intention des International Review for Social History des IISG u.a.: 'According to its articles of association the object of the International Institute for Social History is the study of national and international social history. A scientific institution, it stipulates nothin but objective treatment and research of historical sources. The International Review for Social History, now appearing for the first time, is governes by this principle. It aims at bringing more order, more knowledge and more insight into the large field of social history (...) Only too much is social history still regarded as a non-independent branch of social knowledge. Yet it is a science apart: not so much on account of special methods of research - for these it has in common with other branches of history -, but because of the special domain covered by social history as distinct from the other sections of scientific historiography. This misunderstanding may partly be explained from the term 'social' which, however much used and abused in these modern times, has nevertheless no constant and clearly outlines meaning in itself. If we try to define the idea we find that social history comprises the history of the groups, strata and classes of a nation in so far as these have a more or less sharply defined economic basis of existence (...) In social history the realtionship of the parts of a nation to thewhole, or the inter-relationship of the parts themselves is always of paramount importance.
