Rare first Italian edition and at the same time first translation in any modern language of the most important treatise on agriculture, food and beverages from Ancient Rome. Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella (4-70 AD) used many texts that are no longer extant and also wrote from his own experience as a landowner. The "De re rustica" is divided into twelve books of which the third and forth are dedicated to viticulture and wine. There are further chapters about olive trees, cheese making, fish and fish ponds, bee-keeping and the production of honey and wax, gardens, many kinds of animals and food etc. This edition has a privilege by Pope Paul III. and a dedication of the printer Michele Tramezzino to Zaccaria Delfino. - Elegant imprint with two nice different woodcut devices showing Sibillae with books.
