Ihren besonderen Wert erlangten sie dadurch, dass Bloch bei der Erstellung seiner Werke vor allem auf seine eigene Sammlung von Fischen zurückgriff. Gemeinsam mit Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider begann Bloch mit den Arbeiten an einem Katalog, der unter dem Titel Systema ichthyologiae iconibus CX illustratum alle Fischarten der Welt aufführen sollte, aber nie vollendet wurde. Allerdings umfasst das fragmentarische Werk 1519 Artbeschreibungen. Blochs Fischsammlung umfasste rund 1500 Exemplare und wurde 1810 dem Berliner Zoologischen Museum, heute Naturhistorisches Museum, zugeführt. Mit den 800 noch vorhandenen Exemplaren ist sie die größte noch bestehende ichthyologische Sammlung aus dem XVIII. Jahrhundert. - - - - Das Büttenpapier stammt von der niederländischen Papierfirma "Honig Breethuis in Zaandijk", das heute ein Wohnhaus-Museum ist. Die Tafelnummer: 217, 218, 219, 220, 224, 225, 235, 236, 237, 238, 241, 242, 244, 245, 246, 248, 249 und 251 zeigen Teile des Wasserzeichens dieser Firma. - - - - The following plates have parts of the water-mark-inscription: "C & I HONIG" with a coat of arms with two crossing double-lines over the shield. These are the leafs Nr.: 217, 218, 219, 220, 224, 225, 235, 236, 237, 238, 242, 244 and 248. The leafs Nr. 219, 241, 245, 246, 249 and 251 have a "fleur de lis" watermark, which is part of the watermark "C&I HONIG". The factory of these papers was the "Honig Breethuis in Zaandijk". Some leafs have a stamp on the backside with: "A.Rg.".
