Beschreibung:

8°, circa 16,8 x 10,3 cm., 2 ff., 152, 80 pp.. Contemporary mottled calf with richly gilt spine Apparently the first and only edition of this curious work by the satirist Sébastien-Marie-Mathurin Gazon-Dourxigné (1720-1784) from Quimper in the Bretagne. He discusses in which way several peoples like the Jews, Arabs, Chinese, Germans, English etc. behave silly or cherish ridiculous opinions and convictions. While the essays give an interesting panorama of typical prejudices against various nationalities in the 18th century, they seem to aim mainly against the French themselves that are being indirectly criticized for habits the author disapproves of. - The second part contains several mythological poems again with a connection to contemporary persons and events. - Here the text is complete but after page 152 ("fin") there is not the short advertisement of the publisher bound in.

Bemerkung:

- Nice copy, only a little browned or rubbed, mainly clean and in an elegant binding.
