"Norman Mommens, born 1922, was a Belgian Sculptor, painter, poet and philosophic writer, of Flemish origin, born in Antwerp, Belgium, schooled there, in the Netherlands and England. He studied mural painting at Elkerlyc, the High School for Architecture and the Visual Arts, in Amsterdam. In 1948 he left Belgium for England, worked in an English pottery, then set up his own workshop near Newhaven. He exhibited at the 1951 Festival of Britain. Created and played in the Shuttlecock Mime Company, which toured Sussex villages. In 1952 he began working in various stones and woods, sometimes combining the two, in 1962 moving to Carrara, Italy, to sculpt marble. In 1948 Mommens was married to Ursula, potter and first wife of the painter Julian Trevelyan, but this marriage was dissolved. Then for almost 38 years until his death his lover and companion was Patience Gray, the cookery writer."
