In addition to its function as a collecting and exhibiting museum specializing in photography from 1900 to the present, the Center also is the repository for the archives of important American photographers, including Edward Weston, Sonya Noskowiak, Ansel Adams, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, W. Eugene Smith, Aaron Siskind, Harry Callahan and Richard Avedon. Each of these archives contains hundreds, sometimes thousands of photographs, countless negatives, manuscripts, and other materials relating to the careers of these photographers. It is from these archives and the Center's collection of approximately 50,000 photographs that we have chosen 257 prints to indicate the major trends and directions that American photography has taken since the advent of modernism in the twenties.
