Recent reports which have appeared in the United Kingdom and North America have revealed that gay men, lesbians and bi-sexuals are subject to a range of discrimination and intolerance within the mental health system. Treatment of homosexual clients has been dominated by the 'illness' paradigm which stems originally from medicine and psychiatry. Many people who have turned to psychotherapy and counselling have experienced their sexuality being used by professionals quite inappropriately to interpret whatever problems they have brought to the situation. Although they continue to use psychotherapy and counselling services, many remain deeply and justifiably suspicious. Most psychotherapy training programmes do not incorporate elements which examine the special needs of the gay and lesbian populations. As a result, it is questionable whether practitioners possess the basic and necessary skills for assessing and employing interventions based on sexually sensitive material. An unexamined and untrained approach to working with homosexual populations can no longer be tolerated within psychotherapy. The purpose of this book is to address some of the incoherence that exists in this field. The contributions - five from the UK and two from the USA - address theories and models of practice that will be more beneficial to the therapeutic needs of homosexual clients. The accounts represent a significant step towards a better understanding of the needs of this client group. (Verlagstext) ISBN 1853434043
