VANDEPiTTE Selectieve bibliografie // This book compiles the lectures given during the symposium 'Paper. Preservation and Decay', which took place in Aalst on io and n September 1992. This symposium was part of the first edition of the Biennale 'Paper. Image and Base' (6 June-20 September 1992), which highlighted various aspects of paper and its artistic use, from a historical as well as a current point of view. Dirk Martens (1446-1534), citizen of Aalst, humanist and first printer in the Netherlands, was chosen as a point of departure for this project. The 1992 edition included exhibitions on diverse locations in the city and offered a kaleidoscopic view on different facets of using paper in the contemporary international art scene. Internationally renowned experts tackled the problem of conserving and restoring paper art works. The Dirk Martens Committee thought it expedient to publish these texts as a sequel to 'Conservation and Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Art', a publication which resulted from the 1990 symposium of the same name. At this occasion as well, Prof. Dr. Claire Van Damme was the moving spirit behind the organisation of this event, an initiative of the Centre for Conservation and Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Art, subsidiary to the Seminar of Plastic Arts at the University of Ghent.
