Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Titel u. Text niederländ. und engl. - Mark Rothko once described form in paintings as 'a unique element in a unique situation'. I have come to find this remark, if somewhat dry perhaps, significant for the work of Robert Mangold. He is exemplary in using a painter's elementary language in which circles, squares and oval shapes have become unique elements, built from unique situations. Since 1964, he has developed a repertoire of painterly representations peculiarly his own within the constraints of the two pairs of shape and line, of color and surface. From 1985 on, his latest work again sets exemplary evidence of his style as he matches an apparently more easy-going painting touch with a more explicit formal language without disturbing the balance. Balance, and even harmony remain his trademark. From the beginning, it was our wish that Christel Raussmüller-Sauer would write for us. I am grateful to Franz Kaiser for having provided a theoretical framework. (From the Preface). ISBN 907225113X
