Der aus Macerata stammende Militärarchitekt P. P. Floriani (1584-1638) wurde - nachdem er in Spanien, Algerien, Oesterreich, Ungarn, Prag und Bratislava als Offizier und Militairingenieur tätig war - 1634 von Papst Urban VIII 1634 nach Malta gesandt, wo er am Bau der Festungsanlagen beteiligt war. Von diesem reich illustrierten Fortifikationsbuch wurde eine (sehr viel häufigere) zweite Ausgabe 1654 in Venedig und schliesslich noch eine dritte 1725 in London veröffentlich. - (Wenige Tafeln gebräunt, stellenweise minimal stockfleckig). - Insgesamt ein sehr gutes und komplettes Exemplar dieser Rarität. Very scarce first edition of this illustrated encyclopedia of all the parts and implements of fortification, one of the few Italian standard works on the subject published in the 17th century. P. P. Floriani (1584-1638) from Macerata was an engineer employed by pope Urabnus VIII. When Floriani inspected the Valletta front he wrote that these could not be adapted to the artillery warfare prevalent at that time. Warfare was changing and artillery was increasingly being used. A second edition of this important book was published at Venice in 1654, a third one at London in 1725. - Contemporary vellum, back on three raised bands, ms. title on spine.
