Vorzugsausgabe gebunden bei der Binderei Richard Mayer; Farbig marmorierter, von innen gefütterter Hartkarton-Schuber, marmorierter, mit Papier überzogener Holz-Einband mit Lederecken, goldgeprägter, dekorativ leicht verblasster Rücken mit Titel und Dekor, 5 Bünde, Filets minimal berieben, sehr solide, tadellose Bindung, Buchblock einwandfrei. Schweres, getöntes, eigens für diese Auflage hergestelltes Hahnemühle-Bütten, zweifarbige Titelei mit Vignette, 10 Seiten (Dedication etc. mit Bordüren, ornamentierten Initialen, Vignette ), 134 (Doppelseitenzählung = 67) Seiten mit 43 ganzseitigen Tafeln und zugeordnetem erklärendem Begleittext. MIT BEIHEFT (Einleitung) auf Deutsch, tadellose Broschur, 17 paginierte Seiten. "Twenty-eight hundred copies were printed for the members of Editions Medicina Rara Ltd. at the presses of the Druckerei Holzer, Weiler im Allgäu, West Germany, on a rag paper manufactured especially for this edition by August Köhler, Oberkirchen, West Germany, and bearing the private watermark of Medicina Rara. The plates for this printing were made from two copies of the original 1655 Ulm edition, one belonging to the Leopold Sophien Bibliothek Überlingen, the other to the Württembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart". A wonderful facsimile in its original slipcase, undated, published around 1975, hardly any wear marks, excellent condition. Johannes Schultheiss (Latinized to 'Scultetus') was one of the first academically trained physicians and surgeons in Germany in the 17th century. After his studies at the University of Padua under Adrian van Spieghel and Fabricius ab Aquapendente he became official physician of his home town of Ulm. His remarkable textbook on surgery, the 'Armamentarium chirurgicum' was first published 10 years after his death and passed through many editions and translations all over Europe. This work contains a complete catalogue of surgical instruments, illustrated demonstrations of a variety of operative procedures and 100 case reports. The success of Scultetus' publication was responsible for an improved standard of the education of the nonacademic barber surgeons, who were treating the majority of the population, and was a significant milestone for the development of surgery as an academic speciality.
