This is a later abridged edition (publ. about 1800) beautifully newly bound, with seven plates, each with six portraits. Some light foxing at the beginning of the book. Altogether a beautiful copy of this classic writing that Charles Darwin probably had in his library! Lavater's name would be forgotten but for his work in the field of physiognomy, Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe (1775-1778).
